Verbal items would shift what is measured from reasoning towards how much of a language you have been exposed to. Raven Progressive Matrices and the Culture Fair Intelligence Test are built from figures alone for the same reason. Colour is never used to tell options apart, because colour vision differs from person to person. A RANGE, NOT A SINGLE NUMBER The number of correct answers is not used directly as the score. Each item carries a difficulty, ability is estimated through those difficulties (item response theory), and the result is converted to an IQ with a mean of 100 and a standard deviation of 15. With 6 options, the share you would get right by chance is subtracted inside the estimate. There is a limit to what 52 items can tell you, so each section result carries a 95% confidence interval. DIFFERENT ITEMS EVERY TIME Items are generated fresh for every sitting, so memorising answers gets you nowhere. To avoid a practice effect there is a 1 hour wait between sittings.
