Novaz: Food & Cosmetic Scanner

About

Novaz is a food scanner and cosmetic ingredient checker. Scan a barcode for a score out of 100, what pulled it up or down, and a better product on the shelf. Additives, sugar, salt, saturated fat, parabens, fragrance allergens, endocrine disruptors: Novaz names them, rates them, and shows you who says so. HOW THE SCORE WORKS For food: 60% nutrition, 30% additives, 10% organic certification. Nutrition uses the 2023 Nutri-Score algorithm from Santé publique France — the current version, not the old one. Energy, sugars, saturated fat and salt count against; fibre, protein and fruit, vegetables and legumes count for. Drinks have their own table, and so do fats, oils, nuts and seeds. Additives start at 100 and come down by risk; a high-risk one caps the whole score at 49 however clean the nutrition looks. For cosmetics, every INCI ingredient is rated on its own and the riskiest sets the ceiling: one moderate-risk ingredient holds the product under 50, one high-risk under 25. A label Novaz can't read most of gets no score, rather than a flattering one. EVERY RATING, WITH THE WORK BEHIND IT 334 food additives and 801 cosmetic ingredients, each with a risk level, a sentence saying why, and the assessment behind it: • European Food Safety Authority • EU Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety • Cosmetic Ingredient Review panel • WHO and FAO expert committee on food additives • International Agency for Research on Cancer • European Chemicals Agency • EU Regulations 1333/2008 and 1223/2009, and US 21 CFR Tap one and it opens: the regulation on EUR-Lex, the section on eCFR, the body's own published opinions. Each carries the date it was last reviewed. BETTER, NOT SPONSORED When something scores badly, Novaz searches its category for products scoring at least ten points higher. Nothing is promoted, no brand can buy a place, and there is no advertising or affiliate link in the app. The Recommendations tab keeps every swap, filed under the scan that prompted it. DIET ALERTS (PRO) Set what you avoid — gluten, lactose, palm oil, peanuts, tree nuts, soy, egg, or anything not vegetarian or vegan — and Novaz warns you on the scan card and drops those products from its suggestions. When a label doesn't carry enough to be sure, it says so rather than guessing. Your scans and preferences stay on the device. Novaz has no server of its own, so there is nowhere for your shopping to be collected. WHEN A PRODUCT ISN'T THERE Both databases are built by the people who use them, so coverage is uneven: thinner for cosmetics, and outside Europe. If a barcode is missing, add it from inside Novaz: photograph the front, the ingredients and the nutrition table, and the app reads the text off them. WHY SCORES DIFFER Because the methods do. Novaz uses the published Nutri-Score algorithm and published additive assessments, and shows you both, so you can disagree with it on the evidence. A low score is a comparison against the rest of that category, not a warning: Novaz is a guide, not medical advice.
