About
INSPIRATION The sundial is an ancient instrument for telling the time. It made invisible time visible. Nobody uses one anymore. Sundial sets out to do the same, in a way made for today: it draws time again with shapes, colours and progress. THE NAME The Chinese name, 岁时, comes from Jingchu Suishi Ji, written by Zong Lin in sixth-century China. The book follows the year from New Year's Day to New Year's Eve, and in its pages a year is not 365 identical days but a sequence of named stretches of time. The app does the same: it cuts continuous time into pieces and lays them out in front of you. The English name, Sundial, is that ancient instrument for telling the time. TIME YOU CAN SEE Every stretch of time is drawn as a row of marks: behind you in ink, right now in a single vermilion stroke, still ahead in light grey. No need to open the app. Glance at your Home Screen and you know where you stand. · Seven cycles: today, this week, this month, this quarter, this year, the lunar year and your lifetime · Countdown: from a start date to a target date, see what is left · Count up: from a date in the past, see how far you have come · Overview: today, this week, this month and this year side by side · Lifetime: enter your birthday and a life expectancy, and your life becomes a grid of marks, drawn exactly like your day. Where you are in the day and where you are in your life line up at a glance WHERE YOU LOOK EVERY DAY · Home Screen widgets in small, medium and large, plus extra large on iPad · Lock Screen widgets in circular and rectangular, so a countdown can sit right on your Lock Screen · Full iPad support in both orientations 29 STYLES, 57 PALETTES Bars, thin bars, capsules, stairs, dots, dot matrix, ring, tick ring, ink ring, hexagons, timeline, neon, and motifs from Chinese ink painting: pine, bamboo, plum, leaf, mountains, clover, moon phase and seal. From a single hairline to a small painting, all in the same paper and ink language. Palettes come in Universal, Chinese, Night, Material and Contrast, or build your own from any background and accent colour. Over twenty typefaces, and the figures follow them: stroke weight and line ends match the character of the font. FULL SCREEN AND SHARING Open any item for a full screen view: this year as 365 dots, one for each day, or this month as a calendar of dots. Share any of them as an image. YEAR PROGRESS ON THE FIRST OF EACH MONTH At 9 AM on the first of each month, a silent notification with a card of the year so far. Check this year's progress in Settings any time, share it, or turn the reminder off. YOUR DATA STAYS YOURS Everything is stored on your device and in your own private iCloud database. The developer never sees it and collects nothing. With iCloud sync on, switch phones or reinstall and your widgets are still there. Sync can be turned off at any time. FREE AND PRO The free version lets you create three widgets with the basic styles and every palette. Sundial Pro removes the limit and unlocks every style and iCloud sync, on iPhone, iPad and Mac.
