Every ride has that one stretch — the crack, the frost heave, the pothole that always finds you — and until now there was no way to see it coming or tell anyone else about it. BumpWatch turns your Apple Watch into a bike-lane sensor. Tap Start before you ride and it tracks your route by GPS while reading your Watch's accelerometer, watching for the sharp jolts that mean you just hit something. When it finds one, it logs exactly where, how hard, and when — automatically, with nothing for you to do but keep riding. It's a standalone Watch app. No phone required, no account, no subscription. Put your Watch on, tap Start, ride, tap Stop. That's the whole interaction. WHERE THE DATA GOES Every ride you record adds to a free, public heatmap at bikelanebumps.org — real bump data from real rides, aggregated street by street. Riders can check a route before they take it, and over time the map builds an honest record of which bike lanes are falling apart and which ones hold up. There's no login and no private view: what you record becomes part of the shared map for everyone. WHAT IT NEEDS FROM YOU - Location, to place each bump on the map. - Motion, to read the accelerometer and detect bumps. - Health, to run a background workout session — this is what lets BumpWatch keep tracking after your Watch screen locks. It creates a normal cycling workout entry in your own Health app, the same as any fitness app would, and that entry never leaves your device. YOUR DATA, HANDLED SIMPLY There's no account system, so nothing ties a ride back to you personally — no name, no email, no device ID. Bump and ride data is public by design, which is the whole point of the map, but nothing beyond that gets collected. It's built by a rider who got tired of guessing which streets were going to rattle him off his line, and figured a Watch already sitting on his wrist could just keep score. The map is free to use, and BumpWatch is free to run — feedback and support requests go straight to schoellojeff@gmail.com. BumpWatch is a data-logging tool, not a safety device. It doesn't warn you about hazards in real time — riding attentively and using your own judgment about traffic and road conditions is still on you.
