About
In 1793 the governing body of the First French Republic introduced a series of standardizations and reforms. Some of them, like the metric system and the French departments, survive today. Others, like The Republican Calendar, were disposed of. In the case of The Calendar, that's a real shame. The months were re-divided and given wonderful, evocative names. "Thermidor", "Germinal", "Floréal". The week was stretched to ten days, and for each day, a facet of the natural world was set aside for contemplation. This expression of The Calendar has been built directly from the primary sources. In it, you'll find images and writings from the period, tools for converting between Republican dates and ours, and most importantly, spreads for each daily dedication. I've tried to render The Calendar in as much engrossing detail as possible... "...so that from the first of Germinal it will paint itself effortlessly upon the imagination". — Fabre d'Églantine to the National Convention, 24 October 1793
