You usually set the time yourself. Actually starting is another matter. You know it's time to leave, time to start writing, time to turn off the stove. What goes off is the same machine beep as always. You glance at it, dismiss it, and the thing is still there. When you're the one nudging yourself, it's easy to put it off a little longer. When someone else calls you, it's different. That's why Analar exists. A friend records something ahead of time, and it plays at the time you set. You don't know what they said until it goes off. It isn't you talking to yourself, so you're more likely to get moving right away. They can tell you to head out, nag you about the thing you almost forgot, or just say something silly. You can record one for them, too. If they don't get to it in time, a regular tone plays instead, so the moment doesn't just slip by.
