About
Discover your soil texture with a jar, water and your iPhone. Soil Jar guides you through the traditional soil jar test using clear, visual instructions. Once the sample has settled, photograph the jar, mark the visible layers and let the app calculate the proportions of sand, silt and clay. Your measurements are then converted into a recognised soil texture classification, such as loam, sandy loam, clay loam or silt loam. HOW IT WORKS Collect a representative soil sample. Add soil, water and a small amount of washing-up liquid to a straight-sided jar. Shake the jar and allow the particles to settle. Photograph the separated layers. Drag the measurement guides into position. View your soil texture result. VISUAL, INTERACTIVE GUIDANCE Follow illustrated instructions that show how to prepare the sample, photograph the jar and identify each sediment layer. MEASURE THE LAYERS Use four draggable guides to mark: • The bottom of the sediment • The top of the sand layer • The top of the silt layer • The top of the clay layer Sand, silt and clay percentages update as the guides move. UNDERSTAND THE RESULT See: • Your soil texture classification • Sand, silt and clay percentages • A visual layer-composition chart • Your position on the soil texture triangle • A short, plain-language explanation SAVE YOUR TESTS Name tests by garden area, add notes and keep a local history of completed results. PRIVATE BY DESIGN No account is required. Soil photographs, measurements and saved results remain on your device. Soil Jar estimates soil texture from the visible proportions of sand, silt and clay. It does not measure pH, nutrients, contamination, fertility or soil health.
