About

Get It is one of the trugs card games, Teach Reading Using Games, and it turns phonics practice into a guessing game children actually want to play. Every card lies face down, but its colour and shape are showing, and the Master Card lists the words, four in each colour. So a player always knows which four the hidden card could be. They read those four, choose the one they think it is, and turn the card over to find out. That small act of choosing is the whole trick. A player cannot pick without reading all four words first, so every turn is four words decoded, not one. Guessing is not a shortcut. It is the reason the reading happens, and it is what Teach Reading Using Games means in practice. HOW IT PLAYS Look at the colour and shape on the top card. The matching Master Card column lights up with the four words it could be. Read them, say your choice aloud and tap it. Your opponent guesses too, then the card turns over and everyone reads the word. Guessed right? You keep the card. If nobody got it, it goes to the bottom of the pack to come round again: repetition arriving without anyone insisting on it. Tap the card to deal the next one. When the pack runs out, whoever holds the most cards wins the stage. Both players guess the same card, so it is a race to read, not a wait for a turn. BUILT ON THE TRUGS PROGRAMME Every word comes from the trugs programme, structured, systematic synthetic phonics chosen by thousands of schools. Words are strictly decodable and introduced in a fixed order, so a child only ever meets sounds they have already been taught. Nothing is guessed from context or memorised as a shape. FIFTEEN STAGES, THREE LEVELS, 476 WORDS Level 1, Foundation, Stages 1 to 5: CVC words, initial blends, final clusters, two-syllable words, r-controlled vowels. cat, stop, lamp, rabbit Level 2, Vowel Power, Stages 6 to 10: split digraph, vowel digraphs ai oa ee and oo ow oi, two syllables with digraphs, three-syllable words. cape, rain, moon, raindrop Level 3, Advanced, Stages 11 to 15: soft c, soft g, consonant plus le, four-syllable words, suffixes and endings. city, giant, table, information Each stage holds 32 words in four colour groups and every game deals sixteen, so a child who replays a stage meets the same sounds in new words. Across the fifteen stages there are 476 distinct words, every one recorded. FEATURES 15 stages of carefully sequenced decodable words, 476 in total Clear spoken audio, recorded in British English, for every word Play against Trug the robot, or two players sharing one device Six avatars to choose from Stage notes written three ways, for child, parent and teacher Large, high-contrast type chosen for readability No timers, no rush, take as long as a word needs Short games that finish before attention runs out Works offline WHO IT IS FOR Children learning to read, and children who need more repetition than a classroom day allows. Older struggling readers who want practice. Parents supporting reading at home, and teachers, tutors and assessors who already use trugs. THE PERSON BEHIND TRUGS trugs was created by Joanna Jeffery MBE, a dyslexia specialist and teacher of more than thirty years. Looking for the best way to teach children to read, she kept arriving at the same observation: children want to enjoy the process. So she put the professional side of decoding print together with the fun of playing cards, and trugs was the result. FROM SENSORY APP HOUSE We build assistive technology for people who find reading hard. Get It comes from the same team as the trugs card range and covers the same stages in the same order.
