About

Finsternis shows you every upcoming solar and lunar eclipse β€” and, more importantly, whether you can actually see it from where you are. WHAT'S COMING UP Browse a clean list of upcoming eclipses through 2050. Each one tells you at a glance how it looks from your location: total, annular, partial, penumbral β€” or not visible at all. SEE IT ON A 3D GLOBE Open any eclipse to see its path drawn across a real 3D globe, scrub through time to watch the Moon's shadow sweep over the Earth, and read the exact local contact times β€” first contact, maximum, last contact β€” alongside a live coverage readout. Not sure what a "penumbral" or "annular" eclipse is? A built-in explainer shows you, and can take you straight to the next one of that kind. ANYWHERE ON EARTH Set your observation point to your current location, or search for any place, to see exactly what the eclipse looks like from there β€” perfect for planning a trip to the path of totality. Heading somewhere for a while? Set a time-limited location that switches back afterwards. FIND IT IN THE SKY When the moment comes, the Sky Finder uses your compass to point you to exactly where the Sun or Moon will be β€” for first contact, maximum, or last contact β€” so you know where to look. DON'T MISS ONE Get a notification before every eclipse that's visible from your location, at the lead times you choose β€” or add any eclipse straight to your calendar. BUILT TO WORK ANYWHERE Finsternis computes every prediction on your device from NASA's public-domain data β€” no account, no tracking, works offline. (The map and place search use Apple Maps and need a connection.) A universal app for iPhone and iPad, in English and German. Safety: never look at the Sun directly or through the app without certified solar-eclipse filters.
