On a big plate, Soba now names the food worth weighing. In our test on 400 meal photos, estimates of 40 g of carbs or more had the largest errors. The test is linked from the result, the Soba Pro screen and Settings > Sources. New photo tip: if the photo can't show something, such as sugar in tea, type a few words in the field on the main screen.

About
Photograph your meal or describe it in words. Soba estimates the foods and portions, then calculates net carbs, bread units, glycemic index (GI) and glycemic load (GL). CHECK AND ADJUST PORTIONS See estimates for the whole meal and each food. Change a portion's weight to recalculate the values. Protein, fat, fiber and calories are also shown. Food recognition and portion sizes are estimates that you can correct. BREAD UNITS Choose 10, 11 or 12 grams of carbs per bread unit in Settings. LOG YOUR FOOD • Photo: take a picture or select one from your library. Camera guidance helps with lighting and framing. • Description: type a meal such as “potatoes with chicken and vegetables.” • Barcode: look up packaged food in Open Food Facts when a record is available. • Manual entry: build a meal and enter the portions yourself. HISTORY AND DAILY TOTALS Saved meals stay on your iPhone and are available offline. Search by name or ingredient, review daily totals and add a previous meal again. APPLE HEALTH With your permission, Soba writes nutrients and meal times to Apple Health. When enough glucose readings are available there, you can view them around a meal. FREE ACCESS AND SOBA PRO One photo or text scan per device per calendar month is free. Barcode lookup, manual entry, meal history, daily totals and Apple Health integration are available without a subscription. Soba Pro offers monthly and annual subscriptions for additional photo and text scans. Daily usage limits apply. The app shows current prices and any trial offer available to you before purchase. Subscriptions renew automatically. Manage or cancel them in your Apple Account subscription settings. DATA AND USE Soba works without a user account. Photos and descriptions are sent for AI processing after you give consent. Our servers hold photos in memory during processing. The interface is available in English, German, Russian, Simplified Chinese and Japanese. HOW WE TESTED IT We ran Soba on 400 meal photos from two public research datasets, Nutrition5k and SNAPMe. From one photo, 68.5% of carb estimates were within 10 g of the recorded amount, and the median error was 5.2 g. A hint that named the foods as the study recorded them added about 4 percentage points. When Soba’s estimate is 40 g of carbs or more, it can be off in either direction, so on a big plate weigh the main carb food. Method and per-meal data: https://soba-app.com/accuracy/ CHECK THE ESTIMATES Check foods, portions and nutrient estimates against product labels and your care plan. Soba is not a medical device and does not recommend medication doses. Discuss medical decisions with your care team.
