Match It is a card game for learning to read English. It turns phonics practice into a game children actually want to play. Every card carries an English word. To play one, a child reads it aloud, then matches it to the card on the table by colour and shape or by number. Nothing is guessed, nothing is memorised as a picture. It is all about a fun way to read words. HOW IT PLAYS Play a card from your hand that matches the one on the table, same colour and shape, or same number. Read the word aloud as you play it. No match? Take a card from the pack, up to two draws. The trugs card is wild: it goes on anything, and you choose the colour that follows. First player to an empty hand wins. Playing solo, Trug the robot waits. There is no timer and no rush, so a child can take their time over a word, sound it out, ask for help, then press Go when they are ready for Trug's turn. Playing with two, the screen pauses between turns so hands stay private. BUILT ON THE TRUGS PROGRAMME Every word comes from trugs, Teach Reading Using Games, the structured English phonics programme used by teachers, tutors and specialist assessors in schools across the UK. The words and spellings are English, and every word is spoken aloud in a natural voice. Words are strictly decodable and introduced in the order English is normally taught, from simple three-letter words through to the suffixes that carry the longer words found in books, so a child only ever meets letter sounds they have already been taught. FIFTEEN STAGES, THREE LEVELS, 1,014 ENGLISH WORDS Level 1, Foundation, Stages 1 to 5: CVC words, initial blends, final clusters, two-syllable words, r-controlled vowels (cat, stop, lamp, rabbit, corn) Level 2, Vowel Power, Stages 6 to 10: split digraph, vowel digraphs, longer words built from them (cape, rain, moon, raindrop, fantastic) Level 3, Advanced, Stages 11 to 15: soft c, soft g, consonant plus le, four syllables, suffixes (city, giant, table, information, nation) Each stage has its own word bank: 30 words in a solo game, 40 in a two-player game. Every card in a stage is a different word, so a child who replays a stage meets the same sounds in new words rather than memorising the same handful.
