Ashta Chamma is a kid-friendly version of the traditional South Indian cowrie-shell race, also known as Chowka Bara or Chowka Bhara. Throw four cowrie shells and count how many land facing up. Move one of your pawns that many spaces along the spiral path toward the center home. If no shells face up, you receive the lucky ashta—a move of eight! Land on an opponent on an unprotected space to send that pawn back to the beginning. X-marked safe spaces protect every pawn standing there. Throw a four or eight, or capture an opponent, to earn another turn. Bring all four of your pawns to the center using exact counts to win.
