About

Lumara shows the Moon's phase for your city and the latest photos of the Sun, in three tabs: SUN, LIVE and MOON. Free, with no ads and no account. MOON Computed on your phone for your city, with no internet needed. • Tonight: phase, percent lit, age, distance, moonrise and moonset. • Tonight's path: how high the Moon climbs and where. • Next up: the next four phases, and the next full moon's traditional name and its origin (Northern Hemisphere). • Month calendar, 2026 to 2030, with the Moon drawn for every day. Supermoons get a gold ring, Blue Moons a blue ring. • Moon on any date from 1900 to 2100, such as a birthday: that night's Moon and the nearest full moon. • Supermoons, micromoons (full moons farthest from Earth) and Blue Moons to 2030, with distances in miles or kilometers. • Lunar eclipses to 2030, with their times and whether you can see each one from your city. • Right way up for your hemisphere. Tap FAR SIDE to see the half never seen from Earth. Full moon, supermoon and eclipse times are checked against published tables. The Moon picture is NASA's for the current hour when NASA has one; otherwise Lumara draws it from NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter map. SUN • 12 views of the Sun from NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory and the SOHO spacecraft (ESA and NASA), from the corona to sunspots and the magnetic field. • Each photo says when it was taken or posted. If a source has nothing new, Lumara asks the next; if none is recent, it shows the newest photo and says how old it is. • Pinch to zoom, on photos up to 4096 pixels across. • Solar storm card: NOAA's Kp index, the solar storm level from 0 to 9. Kp 5 or higher is a storm. • Solar flares and coronal mass ejections (clouds of material thrown off the Sun) from the last 7 days, with links to NASA's reports. LIVE • Last 24 Hours: Lumara's own movie of the Sun, one photo every 5 minutes, rebuilt about every 3 hours. • Last 48 Hours: NASA's movies in 6 views. When NASA's movie is out of date, Lumara says so and can ask Helioviewer to build a fresh one. WIDGETS (iOS 17 or later) • Moon, small: the Moon, its phase and percent lit. Medium adds the days to the next full moon and its name, date and time. • Moon on the Lock Screen: round, rectangular or one line. • Moon and Solar Storm, medium: the Moon next to NOAA's Kp index. • Solar Storm: small, or on the Lock Screen a 0 to 9 gauge or one line. Moon widgets work without internet and can show the Northern or Southern Hemisphere view. Styles: Dark and System colors. ALERTS Off until you turn them on in Settings, under ALERTS. Alerts are scheduled on your phone; no server sends them. • Full moons (all, or supermoons only): at the time you pick. • Lunar eclipses (visible from your city, or all): at that time the day before the eclipse night, and an hour before it starts. • Solar storms from NOAA's 3 day forecast (Kp 5, 6 or 7 and up): when the forecast storm starts. SHARE LUMARA In Settings, Share Lumara draws a square picture of today's Sun and tonight's Moon on your phone and opens your share menu with a link to Lumara. YOUR CITY AND YOUR PRIVACY • 170 cities. Lumara starts with a city that matches your phone's time zone. No GPS, no location permission. • No account, no ads, no analytics, no tracking. • Your city and settings stay on your phone; Lumara never sends them anywhere. Your phone's own iCloud backup can include them, so they can come back. • Photos and data come from NASA, Lockheed Martin's solar lab, Helioviewer and NOAA; the 24 hour movie from Lumara's page on GitHub Pages; NASA's space weather reports through Lumara's own small server, which stores nothing about you. Credits: NASA/SDO and the AIA, EVE and HMI teams; SOHO/LASCO (ESA and NASA); NASA SVS; Lockheed Martin Solar and Astrophysics Laboratory; Helioviewer.org; NOAA SWPC; NASA LRO LROC WAC mosaic (NASA/GSFC/Arizona State University). Lumara is not affiliated with or endorsed by NASA, ESA or NOAA.
