Historical Marker Ahead! delivers real-time GPS alerts for historical markers from the Historical Marker Database (HMDB.org) — the world's largest collection of historical markers, memorials, and plaques. As you drive or explore, the app watches your location and alerts you the moment a marker enters your radius. Turn on Auto-Read and it reads each marker's inscription aloud — no tapping, no looking down. Just drive and listen. DESIGNED FOR SAFE, HANDS-FREE USE Set up the app before you drive, then put your phone down. A safety reminder plays each time you start monitoring, and the screen stays awake while monitoring so alerts are never missed. SIRI VOICE COMMANDS Control the app by voice — no setup needed. Say "Hey Siri," then: • "start monitoring in Marker Ahead" / "stop monitoring in Marker Ahead" • "skip marker in Marker Ahead" • "read nearby markers in Marker Ahead" • "increase radius" or "decrease radius in Marker Ahead" • "mute on" / "unmute on in Marker Ahead" More commands are available through the Shortcuts app. FEATURES GPS Proximity Alerts — Choose a radius from 0.1 to 7 miles, or raise the maximum up to 25 miles in Settings for rural areas. Auto-Read — Each marker's inscription is fetched and read aloud the moment you're in range, using your iPhone's voice settings. Direction Announcements — "Historical Marker Ahead. 2.3 miles Northeast." Know exactly where to look. Audio Pause — Your music or podcast pauses while the inscription plays, then resumes. Player Controls — Stop, Pause, Resume, or Skip at any time, or tap ▶ to hear all nearby markers. Queue Mode — In marker-dense areas, new markers are read in turn, nearest first. Filter by Topic — Choose from 70 topics in five categories: Military & War, People & Culture, History & Government, Industry & Infrastructure, and Nature & Places. Your choices apply to alerts, Auto-Read, and your history. Marker History — Every marker you discover is saved to a searchable, date-grouped travel log on your iPhone. Export it to CSV any time. Offline-Ready — Markers are cached on your device for low-signal areas; markers detected offline recover automatically when you're back online. No Repeat Alerts — Markers you've already heard won't alert again unless you choose to reset them. Full HMDB Pages — Tap any marker to open its complete HMDB.org page with photos and full history. Maps Integration — One tap opens any marker's exact location in Apple Maps. PRIVATE BY DESIGN No account or sign-up. Your location is used only to find nearby markers, and your history stays on your device. Optional usage analytics are off unless you turn them on.
