In the 1890s a gambling house in Saratoga Springs would sell you a deck for fifty-two dollars and hand back five for every card you managed to promote. Hardly anyone broke even. The house kept the difference, and the patience that earned it still carries the owner's name. That arrangement explains the layout. Thirteen cards are stacked in a reserve, and that pile is the wall between you and a profit. Four columns of one card each sit beside it. A single card is turned onto the first foundation, and whatever rank it happens to be becomes the starting rank for all four: turn a nine and every foundation runs nine, ten, Jack, Queen, King, Ace, two, and on round to the eight.
