About NOAA The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration formed in 1970, but it’s roots are much older, beginning with Thomas Jefferson and the founding of Survey of the Coast in 1807. Today, NOAA’s mission is to understand and predict changes in climate, weather, oceans, and coasts, to share that knowledge and information with others, and to conserve and manage coastal and marine ecosystems and resources.
